TEHRAN, Nov. 16 (MNA) – The first workshop of “Translation Business” and “Translators’ Rights and Obligations” was held by Tehran Translators and Interpreters’ Association in collaboration with the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature of Tehran University on November 9 at University of Tehran
The aforementioned workshop took approximately about 2 hours in Persian Gulf amphitheater of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature of TehranUniversity.
In this event, Dr. Ali Beikian, the first speaker mentioned topics such as familiarity with different dimensions of translation business in the national and international level.
He also scratched the surface of the topic of translators’ field of activity in translation industry.
In the later section of workshop Mohammad Reza Arbabi, the chair of Tehran Translators and Interpreters’ Association, talked about the necessity of defining translators’ professional ethics and familiarity with the related regulations and rules in both national and international levels.
He also reiterated the necessity for awareness of translators about their rights and obligations from the perspective of law and ethics.
Dr. Ali Beikian, Ph.D. in translation studies, was the instructor of the first section of this workshop.
During the workshop by pointing to the problems and issues that translators face in the current era, he added “To become a successful translator one should know what to do. Improving translation skills and market research are among the key points that every translator should be aware of them.
In the first part, due to the existence of some limitations in universities, the shortcomings can be dealt with by internship programs and providing better opportunities for acquiring experience. As of the second part, the translator should know how to create the appropriate job opportunities for himself.
In this regard, he proposed some strategies such as working in a specific domain, being aware of the translation rates, using the well-known international websites and portals such as Proz.com for finding job opportunities in the international level.
He also mentioned other strategies such as identifying and using translation opportunities, and knowing the affecting factors on the translation industry (specific skills such as voice-over).
At the end, he emphasized that acquiring experience is vital for a bright future in translation industry.
In the later section of the workshop, Mohammad Reza Arbabi also talked about the rights and obligations of translators.
He pointed to the essential principles like awareness of rights and duties and negotiation for getting the rights.
“If we really want to take a definitive step toward providing appropriate job opportunities and market research, we can do this only by knowing different types of intellectual property for different forms (industrial, literary, arts) and translators’ professional ethics," he said.
In this respect, one of the objectives of the Tehran Translators and Interpreters’Associations is to present strategies for acquiring the rights of translators, added he.
Arbabi also described holding these kinds of workshops as one of the proceedings of Tehran Translators and Interpreter’ Association to reach the mentioned objectives.
At the end, the participants greatly appreciated this workshop and showed their enthusiasm for enrolling in Association’s training courses.The courses include practical courses such as SDL Trados Course and familiarity with international websites
