TIAT Holds Translation Rights Panel

A panel of translation experts discussed translation rights to assert the importance and aspects of intangible property rights.‎

The panel was held in close cooperation of TIAT (Translators & Interpreters’ Association of Tehran) with Khaneh Ketab at Saray-e Ahleghalam (Place for Penmen) and Mohammadreza Arbabi (licensed Justice Ministry expert and chairman of TIAT), Seyyed Abbas Hosseini-Nik (chairman of academic books publishers), Shiva Moghanloo (reviewer, translator and author), Mozhgan Dolat-Abadi (Translator) and A'zam Samadi (jurist of intellectual property office in Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance) were the panelists.‎

Mohammadreza Arbabi ran the panel focusing on the importance of translation as an immemorial work and then he underlined the need of adhering to copyrights and Berne convention.‎

“Berne convention faced many challenges since the beginning of the working and countries’ complying not with the convention was among the most problematic challenges.‎ Afterwards, countries would join the convention only as a conditional member and today, almost 95 percent of the world countries are parts of this international convention.‎ Unhappily, Iran is not a part of the convention.‎” Arbabi said.‎

A’zam Samadi talked about enacting the Law of Artists, Authors and Creators in Iran (1969)‎ asserting that law enactment and law enforcement are different subjects.‎ She also highlighted the issues arising from parallel translations.‎

Shiva Moghanloo, another panelist, discussed the problems lie in obtaining copyright by an Iranian publisher and Mozhgan Dolat-Abadi, Turkish translator also talked about her own personal experiences of literary translations holding copyright.‎

Abbas Hosseini-Nik, chairman of academic books publishers, covered the subject of intellectual property rights and then, he concentrated on the history of changes and reforms in the Berne convention.‎

The panel was free for all interested persons, held on Oct.‎ 17, Tehran.‎
